THE BALI TIMES' ARTICLE - MY DEFENCE

Dear Hector,
Your remarks about Made Wijaya were unkind, with no information other than that he irritates you. Surely a public newspaper is not the right
place to say so.

Made Wijaya is a gifted man, with extraordinary insight into Balinese society, surely unequalled by any other Westerner, and with the energy
and creativity of a dozen people: just look at his books, architecture, gardens, blogs and beautiful events he creates. He is also notoriously difficult and opinionated, but so what? One could say of him (as he once said of me) that only the best people like him.

Sincerely,
Diana Darling

FYI: TIM STREET-PORTER COPIED ME HIS LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE BALI TIMES THIS MORNING:

To the Editor,
Hector's comments about Made Wijaya were like a mosquito attacking an elephant. By portraying him as inconsequential, Hector was simply reducing Wijaya to his own dimensions: gossipist for an island tabloid. Obviously all who have taken the trouble to follow Wijaya's career, (and greatly benefited by doing so,) will acknowledge that here is a man who has done more to enlighten us on the culture of Bali than anyone since Margaret Mead. And remember that the latter pursued her social anthropological researches on the Balinese without speaking the language, while Wijaya has taken us inside countless ceremonies with his fluent knowledge of Balinese and his friendship with the palace insiders and priests who conduct the rituals that make up the island's unique culture- this is, after all, what brought Westerners here in the first place. This is also the man who produced the definitive book on Balinese architecture, and much else. To Hector, Wijaya's achievements are meaningless, since his gossipy beat is "Tropical Ibiza"- Bali's superficial world of spas, internet cafes, and trendy restaurants.

Yours,
Tim Street-Porter

Good letter, Tim -- accentuate the positive, as opposed to agrandizing the inconsequential -- and the cowardly. Publishing a venomous personal attack of this sort under a pseudonym is the mark of a loser. He has chosen a revealing nom de plume -- in the Iliad, Hector is the Trojan hero who challenges Achilles and LOSES. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the verb "hector" means to "bully, brag, bluster, or domineer."

The Bali Times doesn't aspire to much, but surely they can do better than this sort of mean-girl gossip.

Dear Made, I am continually disappointed at the standard of people who are allowed to stay and work in Bali. You look around and see aging bules on motorcycles , unshaven and shabbily dressed, and wonder what lies they told the immigration in order to get a KITAS. I have always thought it was a privilege to live and work here, a pleasure to be amongst the living culture , a delight to be in the very atmosphere, then, wham, I am brought back to earth by the reminder that what the English call " the fish and chip brigade "are actually here. I am ashamed that anyone in my profession would make a living by criticising someone whose expertise he cannot even understand. Why come to Bali to be negative? What does the paper gain by such nonsense. I am proud to have been your publisher for so many years and know your knowledge cannot be bought , only gained from hours at the ceremonies, days of glad handing at events, and years of observation. So you get a bit out of hand from time to time that's part of the fun, and you usually do it with people you respect and admire , your equals, and the sparks fly. But this nom de plume nonsense is just sad. I hope the editor realises his mistake and asks the writer to make ammends. This is not journalism that we need on the island. Thanks for 15 years of outstanding columns.

Yours sincerely
Alistair

Bravo, well said, Alistair.

By the way, the headline on my last message was wrong -- I meant "Hector" is the right name for him, since he lacks the onions to use his own name.

Dear Mr. Hector,

Having read your piece on Made Wijaya, I have a couple of questions for you: How long have you been in Bali, Mr. Hector? Do you think you have done more things or better than Made Wijaya that has made you deserve to write such negative critics to him. I might not need to tell you what MW has done for Bali (his garden works, his pieces on Bali, etc). Do you read Stranger in Paradise, by the way? If you do, you should have known him better. Eventhough, people sometimes find his writing ‘naughty’, but they can understand that’s just his style. Instead of showing your ‘envy’ I would suggest you should have a ‘deeper’ sense of humour.
Fyi, for his services to Indonesian culture, he was given name and title ‘KRHT Mangku Wijoyo’ by Sunan of Solo, so it is not only mw2 but mw3.
As you are nothing compared to him, I suggest you should never do thing like this in future, otherwise your ‘Bali Times’ will get less and less respect from your readers.

Yours sincerely,

Putu Semiada

I just read the piece on "MW2".
Reaction I: This fellow is excruciatingly clueless, and how he could fancy  himself a "journalist" is beyond me.
Reaction II: Egad! What set HIM off??! It's rabid! Is he a raging homophobe perhaps?
Reaction III: Forget about it. It's vapid, boring, and nobody will read it.
Nobody actually reads that rag anyway.

First of all, Miss Johnston, for the record,

I am NOT an homosexual, I just help them out when they are busy.
Furthermore, the Bali Times is in almost EVERY hotel room on the island, and on Garuda.
Hector(James Laidlaw) is a known Nancy-boy who Rio told me once groped him in the back room of the LOTUS cafe, Ubud, in 1985.

But thanks.

I believe his name is Richard Laidlaw, not James. He contacted me on Facebook and to get me to say something quotable about you in response to things you'd said about me. I resisted and told him that you were an old friend whom I love and admire and that I tried to treat your teasing like white noise. Let's just ignore him.
Who wouldn't have groped Rio, in 1985?
